Heavy rainfall persists in South Asia
The southwest monsoon and tropical disturbances (Fig. 1) will bring heavy to torrential rainfall over the next five days to parts of central and northern India, southwestern Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, northern and southern coastal Myanmar, eastern Thailand, and Cambodia. Localized extremely heavy rainfall is expected in areas such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Assam in India, as well as Kachin State in Myanmar (Fig. 2). These regions may also experience severe convective weather, including short-duration heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with strong winds. Cumulative precipitation in most affected areas will generally reach 50–100 mm, with isolated totals of 120–180 mm. Localized areas in northern/central Madhya Pradesh, southeastern Meghalaya, and central-northern Kachin State could exceed 300 mm.
Meanwhile, over the past week, parts of central/northern India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar have already received 50–120 mm of rainfall, with localized amounts over 150 mm. The continued heavy rainfall raises high risks of flash floods, landslides, small-to-medium river flooding, and urban waterlogging. Necessary precautions should be taken to mitigate potential secondary disasters triggered by localized extreme precipitation.
