Persistent Heavy Rainfall in Sri Lanka and Southern India

Over the next five days, under the influence of a persistently maintained monsoon trough (Fig. 1), Sri Lanka and southern India will continue to experience frequent heavy rainfall. Accumulated precipitation is expected to reach 50–120 mm, with localized totals exceeding 150 mm in southwestern Sri Lanka and the western parts of southern India. The rainfall will be accompanied by severe convective weather, including short-duration torrential downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds (Fig. 2). Precautions should be taken against secondary hazards triggered by the heavy rain, such as urban waterlogging, flooding of small and medium-sized rivers, and geological disasters.
