Extreme Snowstorms in Several Southeastern US States
Summary:
In January 2025, the average temperature in northern Russia, the Far East, and southern United States was 1–3°C lower than the historical average for the same period. The main areas of heavy precipitation globally were located in southern Africa, the tropical islands of Southeast Asia, northern South America, and northern Australia. Severe wildfires and mudslides broke out in the Los Angeles area, USA. Winter storms repeatedly impacted the United States, with several southern states experiencing extreme snow disasters. A total of four tropical cyclones occurred globally, which is two fewer than the usual number for this time of year.
1. Global Weather Overview
1.1 Temperature
In January 2025, the average temperature in most of Europe, West Asia, Mongolia, northern Australia, northern North America, and southern South America was 1–3°C higher than the historical average for the same period. Some areas, including northeastern Canada, Alaska, and Eastern Europe, experienced temperatures 4–6°C higher than usual. In contrast, northern Russia, the Far East, and southern United States saw temperatures 1–3°C lower than normal, while the rest of the world had temperatures close to the seasonal average (Figure 1).

1.2 Precipitation
In January 2025, the main areas of heavy precipitation globally were located in southern Africa, the tropical islands of Southeast Asia, northern South America, and northern Australia. In most of these regions, the total precipitation ranged from 100 to 200 millimeters, with some areas receiving between 250 and 400 millimeters (Figure 2).
