A part of Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on February 7, 2021, striking the Rishiganga Hydroeletric Dam and causing a surge of flood water along the Dhauliganga river. At least seven people were killed, and up to 150 people were missing in flooding after glacier broke off, media quoted the state's Chief Secretary.

The FY-4A meteorological satellite images at 03:00 (UTC) on February 8, 2020  showed that it is mainly sunny over the disaster area, an upper trough is gradually moving eastward in the southwest (Fig. 1). It is expected that a small amount of cirrus clouds will move over the disaster area in the next 12 hours. (Source: NSMC)
