Persistent High Temperatures in Southern North America, Southwestern Europe, Northern Africa, and Other Regions
Over the past week, influenced by a subtropical high-pressure system, temperatures soared above 38°C in regions including the southwestern United States, northwestern Mexico, Portugal, Spain, southern France, northern Africa, Central Asia, West Asia, northwestern and southeastern India, and the Indochina Peninsula. In some areas, maximum temperatures exceeded 45°C (Figure 1).
Over the coming week, persistent strong subtropical high pressure (Figure 2) is expected to maintain high temperatures in southern North America, southwestern Europe, northern Africa, Central Asia, and West Asia. Daily maximum temperatures will range between 35–38°C across most of these regions. Specific areas, including the southwestern United States, southern Portugal, central and southern Spain, southeastern France, southern Algeria, Mauritania, northern Mali, eastern Saudi Arabia, Oman, eastern Iran, southern Afghanistan, southern Kazakhstan, central and eastern Turkmenistan, and northeastern Pakistan, will see temperatures exceeding 40°C in parts, with localized highs reaching 45°C or above (Figure 3).
