China Meteorological Administration Launches WCM-GWS Forecast Operations for Area C
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Coordination Mechanism (WCM) is a core component of the United Nations' Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative. It is specifically designed to provide customized authoritative meteorological and hydrological information and expert assessments for crisis-prone and conflict-affected regions, thereby facilitating early action and emergency preparedness.
Since June 2026, the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) has officially taken on the responsibility of producing the Global Weekly Scan (GWS) forecasts for Area C under the WCM framework. The GWS product is released every Thursday, focusing on major hazardous weather and hydrological events that may occur in the coming week, along with standardized risk assessments and early warning guidance. This service directly supports the operational planning and decision-making of United Nations agencies and represents a concrete practice in safeguarding the first line of defense for global disaster prevention and mitigation.
Prior to this, on January 21, 2026, the NMC participated online in a technical exchange and cooperation meeting with the WCM working group, officially initiating preparations for undertaking the service. Faced with new operational standards and high requirements, the NMC made forward-looking arrangements and established a dedicated task force. Under the overall guidance of NMC leadership, the World Meteorological Centre (Beijing) Operations Office actively coordinated with the WCM, the Science, Technology and Operations Department drove the reform of global operations, and the Global Weather Division completed the design of new operational workflows and relevant technical training. Together with technical experts from multiple departments including the Typhoon and Marine Weather Centre, the Basin Hydrometeorological Forecasting Centre, the Ecology and Environment Division, and the Severe Weather Centre, trial operations were carried out. Through three months of intensive efforts and pilot runs, key issues such as alignment with operational standards, optimization of technical processes, standardized product development, and transmission and release were effectively resolved, ensuring smooth workflows, accurate forecast conclusions, and stable and timely product dissemination.(WCM-GWS link: WCM Global HydroMet Weekly Scan)
