Background
The 3rd China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum, co-hosted by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and China Meteorological Administration (CMA), will be held in Nanning, Guangxi on 15-17 September 2023.
China and ASEAN Member States, linked by land and sea, care for and help each other. The two have common and similar characteristics regarding the types of meteorological disasters, and are prone to meteorological disasters such as typhoons and torrential rain. ASEAN Member States and China have the common task of developing economies and improving people’s wellbeing. In the context of global warming, the two face the trend of frequent occurrence and recurrence of extreme weather and climate disasters, as well as the challenges posed by rising vulnerabilities. China-ASEAN meteorological cooperation meets the needs of China and ASEAN Member States for development, benefits all parties, and contributes to people’s security and wellbeing.
The China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum is an important event held under the framework of the China-ASEAN Expo. It has been held for two sessions so far. The China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum has built an important platform for meteorological cooperation between China and ASEAN. It integrates into the Belt and Road Initiative, exploits the role of the “Nanning Channel”, fosters meteorological cooperation and exchanges in various fields, and gradually puts in place a sound regional meteorological cooperation system. The first China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum held in 2016 adopted the Nanning Initiative on China-ASEAN Cooperation in Meteorology, which contains a number of pragmatic cooperation measures in response to the needs of meteorological development in the region. In recent years, positive progress has been made in the establishment of cooperation mechanisms, meteorological observation, joint disaster prevention, technical exchanges, climate services, aeronautical meteorology, instrument calibration, meteorological training, etc., which has given new impetus to further meteorological cooperation and ties between China and ASEAN Member States, and made meteorological contribution to building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
